The town of Maspalomas is located on the South side of the island, near the Playa del Inglés. However, it is best known for the nearby dunes area. This nature area of over 400 hectares is enclosed by Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and the sea.
For a walk through this nature reserve you don't have paths to follow. You can start at Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés, follow the flood line and pull in between the dunes. It looks like sitting in the middle of the Sahara. Sitting on top of the dunes you still see the surroundings, but beneath in the dune pans you are as good as 'alone in the world'.
On the side of Maspalomas the area is bounded by a lake with brackish (sweet/salt) water, where the bird-fanciers can have it to their liking.
