The town of Arucas lies at an altitude of 250 meters, a few kilometers south of the GC-2. As you approach the city, from the GC-2, you will see the Montaña de Arucas on the right, a solitary hill whose summit is almost 400 meters high. You can drive up with the car. From the top, you have a beautiful view of Arucas and a large part of the north coast. Conversely you see the Montaña de Arucas also rising from many places on the north coast.
The church of San Juan Battista (John the Baptist) is already visible from afar. Nearby is a fairly large parking lot, which, however, appears to be full even on a weekday in January. A tour through the center of Arucas did not yield a parking space either, so we quit the city and continued our journey to Firgas.
What did we miss ?
When we drive out of the city we also see the 'Ron de Arehunas', where rum has been produced for centuries. We also let this pass us, as we are expected at noon for a guided tour of the Cueva Pintada.
