East of Cassis is the Route des Crêtes, a spectacular coastal road on the Montagne de la Canaille, from Cassis to La Ciotat. This is a small mountain range, consisting mainly of limestone.
By car it takes hardly half an hour, but the numerous observation points are irresistible and make some stops definitely necessary. The route runs across the D141 along the Cap Canaille (363 meters) and the Grande Tête (394 meters). The Cap Canaille is one of the highest cliffs in Europe, rising out of the sea.
Along most of the route is a hiking trail, on some places really on the edge of the cliffs, as seen on the photo on the right below.
